Say hello to Mala, a Life! program participant
I feel more confident cooking healthy meals and feel so much better eating lighter meals. When I get the chance to exercise, I sleep better at night and overall I have more energy.
Busy mother of two Mala Plymin had gestational diabetes during her first pregnancy. Knowing that she had a 50 per cent chance of developing type 2 diabetes, along with the fact that diabetes runs in her family, prompted Mala to join the Life! program with facilitator Ryan Mifsud.
“I really liked that the program was about making small changes to achieve long term goals, and not just a quick fix. Having Ryan as a Life! facilitator was great too – he motivated us to keep coming back.”
Mala had several personal goals she wanted to achieve. She felt she had been unfit for a few years and needed motivation to get active again. Improving her eating habits was another goal, as was weight loss and Mala hoped to be able to wear her wedding ring again.
Mala attended five group sessions that covered topics such as healthy eating and weight control, physical activity, stress management, sleep patterns, goal setting and managing lapses. She found the information useful and the group environment an excellent support.
Over the course of the program, Mala has lost weight and improved her health with some simple and manageable changes. She started by drinking more water and eating more vegetables. “Our family meals are mostly vegetarian these days and I don’t miss meat.”
She’s also cut back on drinking wine, “I save it for Friday or Saturday and just have a glass or two then.”
As a busy accounts assistant with a sporting organisation, Mala finds it hard to get to the gym but hopes to next year when she has more time. In the meantime, she’s increased the amount she walks and now walks her kids to school.
She’s also taken her learnings from the Life! program and applied them to a recent family holiday. Staying in an apartment meant that they could prepare some healthy home-cooked meals and they walked as often as possible.
Mala recommends the program to anyone who is looking to make some changes to their health.
“I feel more confident cooking healthy meals and feel so much better eating lighter meals. When I get the chance to exercise, I sleep better at night and overall I have more energy.”
Her family and children are her constant motivation. “I want to be able to keep up with them and to show my children what a healthy lifestyle looks like.”
The best thing is that Mala is feeling better about herself. “I’m slowly getting my confidence back and people are starting to notice the old Mala again.”
And Mala is so close to wearing her wedding ring again. Well done Mala!
