Why create a healthy workplace?

Promoting and supporting health in the workplace makes good business sense. By creating a healthy workplace environment you can:

  • Increase productivity
  • Increase workplace morale and engagement
  • Lower insurance premiums and workers compensation claims
  • Improve workforce retention
  • Demonstrate your commitment to the health and wellbeing of your employees

The Life! program can help you achieve this. Life! is a free evidence-based healthy lifestyle program available to Victorians at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Supported by the Victorian Government and coordinated by Diabetes Victoria, the program is delivered by health professionals and teaches participants how to live healthier lives and reduce their risk of chronic disease.

The Life! program has a variety of workplace offerings available. Regardless of your organisation’s size, industry or location, the Life! team can tailor a package to suit your needs.

Yarra Trams, BlueScope Steel and City of Whittlesea are just some of the workplaces the Life! program has successfully worked with.

Book a free Healthy Living Session

Healthy Living Sessions are a free service offered by the Life! program and organised at a time and location that best suit your staff. Sessions run for approximately 30 – 45 minutes and are delivered by a trained health professional and cover topics such as:

  • What is diabetes, heart disease and stroke?
  • Healthy eating and weight control;
  • Physical activity;
  • Reducing stress in daily life; and
  • An introduction to Life! — a free healthy lifestyle program.

As part of this session, staff will have the opportunity to complete an AUSDRISK test (Australian type 2 diabetes risk assessment tool), which determines their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

To book a free Healthy Living Session in your workplace, please complete the Workplace Request Form. Please return completed forms to life@diabetesvic.org.au or fax to (03) 9667 1757.

Organise a Life! group course at your workplace

You can take your commitment to your workers’ health a step further by getting Life! to deliver a group course onsite at your workplace. Life! sessions can be delivered before work, incorporated into lunch time or after hours. We work with your organisation to tailor the course to the needs of your workplace and staff.

The Life! group course comprises seven sessions run across a 12-month period. During the program, eligible staff will learn more about nutrition, physical activity, sleep, managing stress, setbacks and goal setting. To organise a group course at your workplace, contact Life! at life@diabetesvic.org.au or 13 RISK (13 74 75).

Create a healthier workplace with the Achievement Program

The Achievement Program will help you create a healthier workplace. This can have a huge impact on the lives of your workforce and help to reduce an individual’s risk of developing chronic diseases, like cancer and type 2 diabetes.

The initiative provides workplaces with a framework, tools, resources and training to improve health and wellbeing by making long-term changes to culture and policies.

Members are encouraged to meet best-practice standards (‘benchmarks’) for good health in areas including healthy eating, physical activity, mental health and wellbeing. The Victorian Government provides recognition to workplaces that meet these ‘benchmarks’.

Learn which initiatives from the Life! program can help you to meet the physical activity or healthy eating benchmarks in the Healthy Workplaces Achievement Program here.
